Oakland, Calif., Apr 25, 2017 At Burckhalter Elementary School on Tuesday, April 25, Oakland Unified School District will host an event to demonstrate an important new visually-based math program made possible by a $350,000 donation from automaker Hyundai Motor America. The money will allow 20 schools to experience the transformative power of ST Math®.
The Hyundai ST Math Initiative (Hyundai Math Labs) was launched in 2011 in partnership with MIND Research Institute. The goal is to help increase math proficiency and educational outcomes. Research shows that early math proficiency is proven to be a leading predictor of later academic success.
The initiative provides students with a unique stimulating approach to education to cultivate deeper and more personalized learning. “Academic advancement, particularly in the STEM fields is of critical importance in today’s economy and we’re pleased to continue to offer this proven program to students who will greatly benefit from it,” says Jerry Flannery, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor America.
OUSD Interim Superintendent Devin Dillon says it’s with support like Hyundai’s that OUSD can truly enhance the instruction that students receive every day. “Oakland schools sit in the technology capital of the world, so training our students in math and all STEM subjects is critical. As our young people gain more expertise in these fields, we know their success in college, career and community will expand dramatically. We thank Hyundai and MIND Research Institute for helping to drive our students to be the leaders of tomorrow.”
