Waddle You Do to Celebrate JiJi Day this Year?

It’s almost that time of year again! The last Friday of April when we celebrate our favorite lovable penguin: JiJi!

JiJi Day is a wonderful opportunity to observe and cultivate a positive school culture around a love of learning math, perseverance, and the thrill of success.

In celebration of JiJi and all the creative mathematical problem solvers out there, we also put together a collection of interesting JiJi facts from a few years ago that’ll get you reacquainted with the ST Math penguin: Who is JiJi?

As we celebrate 27 years of JiJi here at MIND, we welcome you to celebrate with your students on Friday, April 26, 2024. We’ve got some fun and exciting ideas for you this year.

JiJi can’t wait to share what we have in store for you!

JiJi Origami

Print out this fun handout for your students so they can fold and take home their own JiJi with this cool origami activity!

Host a JiJi Dance Party!

It wouldn’t be JiJi Day if no one were dancing, and JiJi loves to dance!

Check out our YouTube playlist featuring JiJi Believer music videos from classrooms like yours. Or play any music your class enjoys and get your groove on! JiJi just loves to boogie.

Get Creative with JiJi Art

Asking students to express their creativity is an excellent opportunity to extend learning and celebrate math.

A few years ago, the Really Big Numbers Club out of Robeson Elementary School in Champaign, Illinois created a JiJi mural using pixel charts! The possibilities for math questions and investigations are endless, and the creation gave students a great idea of what larger numbers (like 50,000) look and feel like!

JiJi Coloring Sheets

Coloring is another creative way for your class to celebrate JiJi Day. These awesome coloring pages come with a guided prompt that asks students how JiJi helps them keep trying. Another sheet encourages your students to draw JiJi celebrating. There are so many options!

Play JiJi Bingo

Looking for another activity to celebrate both JiJi and mathematics? Check out our JiJi Bingo game!

Recommended for: Kingergarten+
Number of Players: 2+
Time: 15-30 minutes

Roll to create mathematical expressions and find the answer on your JiJi Bingo card. The wild JiJi icon will allow players to choose which operation they’d like to use. Make mathematical decisions to try to get 4-in-a-row on your card!

Play ST Math, of course!

JiJi Day is a great day to get some extra ST Math minutes into your schedule.

Here are some ideas to make JiJi Day special:

  • Consider running a JiJi Day marathon. Students can track their puzzles by recording what number of puzzles they start at and where they end. How many puzzles can your whole class complete in 25 minutes?
  • Assign the entire class a challenge objective. These puzzles require thinking outside of the box and are great to work on together in pairs or teams.
  • Allow flexible seating during ST Math time, such as under desks, on pillows, or even outside.

BONUS: Download and Print the Penguins of the World poster!

One of the most common questions we get about JiJi is finally answered:

What species of penguin is JiJi?

We now know that JiJi is a one-of-a-kind math penguin, also known as JiJis mathmaticus!

This just-for-fun poster is available for you to download and print and we recommend printing on 11 x 17 inch paper, though it's also available for 8.5 x 11 inch paper. We hope it's the coolest poster in your classroom or home!

Share your JiJi Day celebrations with us on Social Media! Just remember to tag @STMath on Twitter or Instagram. We can’t wait to see your celebration!
