Warm up this winter with our cheery and educational math activities!
It's December! Put up your lights, don that ugly sweater, and plop down on the couch with a cup of hot cocoa and an extra-cheesy made-for-TV movie. You deserve it!
With the holiday season upon us and many schools taking a break soon, we've put together some fun end-of-the-year winter math activities that will keep students engaged in math right through their winter break. These activities are perfect for any day they might need a little extra math practice. And they're so much fun!
Track Your ST Math Winter Break Progress
Using ST Math at home during winter break can keep concepts learned fresh in students' minds. Students can mark their progress and track their minutes every time they use ST Math.
We have several tracking resources on our website, or you can download the free usage calendar below. The ST Math Usage Calendar is an excellent tool for students to visualize their accomplishments and take ownership of their learning journey. In addition, we encourage students to share their goals with classmates or family at the beginning of the break and work together on a plan to achieve them. This activity is recommended for all grade levels available on the ST Math program.
Looking for a way to engage your students who love creating videos for social media? Try this interactive TikTok math project from middle school pre-algebra teacher Thom Gibson. He and his 7th graders filmed themselves demonstrating their understanding of math concepts using trending songs on TikTok. Check out his video for the project breakdown and grading rubric.
This snowflake craft is a fun and festive way to introduce basic geometry concepts to preschoolers and kindergartners. All you need is some card stock, markers, and stickers to decorate each snowflake. Then, you can post each creation up on your class bulletin board or tape them to a window to get in the holiday spirit.
Want to help your students practice plotting x and y coordinates? Try our coordinate graphing activity! Students will need to plot points and connect the dots to reveal the surprise. After that, coloring is encouraged! Perfect for 5th grade and up.
Help your preschool students refine their number recognition skills with this simple mitten craft. This will allow them time to practice connecting the physical quantities of objects with their corresponding numerical symbols. Recommended for students in Pre-K to 1st Grade.
Penguins love to play in the snow, and each student can take home their own JiJi over the winter break. This Japanese-inspired paper folding activity will help students practice their spatial reasoning skills. Download Origami JiJi on the ST Math help site. Recommended for 2nd grade and up.
Hot Chocolate Marshmallow Math
A warm cup of cocoa is delicious this time of year, but marshmallows take it to a whole new level. You can use this hot chocolate craft to incorporate addition and subtraction concepts to determine the exact number of marshmallows needed for each cup. Recommended for grades K-2.
Writing Prompt and Winter Coloring Sheet
Celebrate with JiJi and Paco! On the first coloring sheet below, share something you're proud of or reveal a goal you've worked really hard to achieve this year. Or, be creative with the second coloring sheet, and tell us what JiJi is up to during the winter break. Is JiJi going to travel? Spend time with friends and family? Surprise us! The coloring sheets and writing prompt will help warm up the holidays, even on the chilliest days!
Whether you're traveling to see family or taking it easy at home this year, take JiJi along for your holiday adventure. Share your pictures with us on Twitter and Instagram by tagging @STMath and using the hashtag #HolidaysWithJiJi.
With your help, ST Math is reaching more students than ever. We are so thankful to our partners, donors, and ST Math champions for being a critical part of MIND's mission. Thank you for helping us ensure that all students are mathematically equipped to solve the world's most challenging problems.
Here's one more fun, free gift from JiJi and all your friends at MIND. Enjoy our annual digital holiday card, which can be downloaded as a wallpaper for your phone or desktop.
